| Frazer Perrett and Stephen Durham at the inaugural banquet for the fathers as members of our High Council. Commander Crawford and Officer Oliver had to depart shortly before the closing banquet in order to return to work and class. |
The 64th Grand Chapter was completed July 6th in Boston, Massachusetts. Beta Theta voting delegates included Commander
Thomas Crawford; Risk Reduction Officer
Trey Oliver, son of Tom; and Alumni Chapter representative House Corporation President
Maury Gaston. Other Beta Thetas attending included
Frazer Perrett and
Stephen Durham to support their fathers, Vice-Regent
Lee Perrett and Regent-Elect
Robert Durham.
At the Monday luncheon, Beta Theta invited delegates from Ole Miss, Georgia, and Alabama to share a table and become better acquainted. A tour of Fenway Park later that afternoon was a real treat.
Commander Crawford served well as a member of the Jurisprudence Committee. Lee Perrett was elected to a second term as Vice-Regent. This is the former High Councilman office. Mr. Gaston chaired the Appeals and Grievances Committee.
In his inaugural remarks, Regent Robert Durham of Mu chapter at the University of Georgia and the father of Stephen Durham, an active member of our Beta Theta chapter, quoted the Auburn Creed, “I believe this is a practical world and that I can count only on what I earn; therefore, I believe in work, hard work.” Regent Durham’s theme for the biennium is “Obligation to Excellence” and he mentioned numerous large chapters across the southeast and mid-west who exemplify the traits to which all chapters should aspire. Regent Durham remarked, “There is no honor in mediocrity; Honor can only be attained through excellence.”
Your Beta Theta representatives introduced legislation to allow for larger collegiate chapters and larger alumni chapters to have more votes at Grand Chapter. We presently have a senatorial system whereby each chapter has two votes and each alumni chapter has one vote. This was the longest debated legislation and it was expectedly soundly voted down.
Brother Gaston was appointed the general fraternity’s Grand Chaplain and will also serve on a Regent-appointed task force to document and publicize best practices from chapters across the country.
The next Grand Chapter will be in Dallas, Texas, in the summer of 2012. All Beta Thetas are welcome!

Haven’t heard from
James “Jimbo” Bouler '81, Beta Theta 1846, in a while? Well, he’s an architect in Islip, New York, specializing in sustainable and environmentally friendly high-end residences. His 11-year-old daughter, Olivia, captured James’ art talent and her favorite subject is birds.
Olivia wrote to the Audubon Society and offered to sell sketches of birds for the benefit of the oil spill clean-up efforts. That offer has resulted in Olivia being on several national television shows, a Facebook page with more than 27,000 fans and donations exceeding $160,000.
Click here to watch a video of Olivia and her family discussing what she's doing to help save the birds affected by the oil spill. The clip aired on the CBS Evening News, June 14, 2010. (It's truly inspirational).
What a wonderful story and a wonderful girl. Our thanks to James and his family for their efforts and results.
Would you like to support Olivia's project? Find more information on her
Facebook page.
